  Passage A

Scientists are trying to make deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts where it seldom rains, so people can grow crops and live there. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more of the earth is becoming deserts all the time.

Why is it like this? Scientists think that people are making deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.

For example, more and more trees are cut in some places. There are also some places on the earth which don’t have much rain, but they don’t become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants prevent the sun form making the earth drier. Plants prevent the wind from blowing the earth away. When a little bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants, the land becomes deserts easily.

  1.Deserts.

  A. get very little rain

  B. have no plants or animals on them

  C. are all turned into good land

  D. can’t be changed to good land

2.More and more of the earth is becoming deserts because.

  A. there is no river there

  B. people are making deserts

  B. they can hold the water in them

  C. plants prevent the wind from blowing the earth away.

  D. all the above

5.What is NOT a right way to prevent the good land from becoming deserts?

  A. We must prevent people from cutting down trees.

  B. We should cover the land with plants.

  C. We should ask people near deserts to move to another city.

  D. We should protect natural vegetation.

  Passage B

Your body, which has close relations with the food you eat, is the most important thing you own. So it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment(营养). The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctors away” is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and vegetables because they contain(包含)vitamin C.

Many people take extra vitamins in pill form(片剂), believing that this will make them healthy. But a good diet(饮食)is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The body does not need or use extra vitamins. So why waste money on them?

In the modern world, many people are too busy to bother about eating properly. They throw anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illnesses caused or made worse by bad eating habits is frightening.

  Passage C

I have learnt of a plan to build three hundred houses on the land called Parson’s Place by the football ground.Few people know about this new plan to increase the size of our town. For me,Parson’s Place is special because it is a beautiful natural area where local people can relax—the small wood has many unusual trees and the stream is popular with fishermen and bird-watchers.It’s very quiet because there are few houses or roads nearby.I think that losing this area will be terrible because we have no other similar facilities in the neighborhood.
